Why are youth homeless?

Behind the statistics are real stories of young people facing immense challenges, often compounded by systemic inequities. Family rejection, the instability of foster care, the weight of poverty, the impact of trauma, and the horrifying reality of sex trafficking that targets those without stable housing, disproportionately affecting LGBTQ+ young people and young people of color. We believe in understanding their complex journeys and providing pathways to a brighter future, acknowledging and addressing the systemic barriers they face.

    • This is a significant driver, especially for LGBTQ+ youth. Rejection due to sexual orientation, gender identity, or other family conflicts can lead to young people being forced out of their homes or choosing to leave for their safety.

    • Family breakdown due to arguments, religious disagreements, abuse, or other dysfunctions also contributes.

    • Youth aging out of the foster care system often lack the support and resources needed for independent living.

    • Frequent placement changes and experiences of abuse or neglect within the foster care system can also lead to instability and homelessness.

    • Economic hardship creates unstable housing situations. Families living in poverty may face eviction, foreclosure, or be unable to afford basic necessities.

    • This can force young people to leave home in search of resources or because their families can no longer provide for them.

    • Experiences of physical, sexual, or emotional abuse can have long-lasting effects, leading to mental health issues, substance abuse, and difficulty maintaining stable relationships.

    • This trauma can make it challenging for young people to stay in their family homes or other stable living situations.

    • Indiana ranks 27th nationally in overall child well-being, with youth homelessness being a contributing factor to this ranking.

    • Homeless youth are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and trafficking. Traffickers often target vulnerable individuals who lack safe housing and support systems.

    • Survival sex, where youth exchange sex for basic needs, is a dangerous reality for many homeless young people.

    • Systemic racism and discrimination contribute to higher rates of poverty and housing instability and less community resources in communities of color.

    • This can increase the likelihood of youth from these communities experiencing homelessness.

    • LGBTQ+ youth are disproportionately represented among homeless populations.

    • Family rejection, discrimination, and lack of support contribute to their vulnerability.
